NC State Dismisses Head Coach Dave Doeren After 14 Seasons
NC State University has announced the termination of head football coach Dave Doeren, concluding his tenure that began in 2013. This decision marks a significant shift for the Wolfpack football program.
Record and Tenure
During his 14 years with the Wolfpack, Doeren amassed a record of 98 wins and 74 losses, making him the most successful coach in the history of NC State football.
Official Statement
In an official statement, athletics director Boo Corrigan expressed appreciation for Doeren’s leadership and contributions to the university. “I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride,” Corrigan stated. He also extended best wishes for Doeren and his family in future endeavors.
Coaching Change and Future Plans
With Doeren’s dismissal, Todd Goebbel has been appointed to serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Goebbel, who has been part of the Wolfpack staff since 2019, currently holds the position of running backs coach and special teams coordinator.
The university has initiated a national search to find Doeren’s permanent replacement, indicating a commitment to establishing a new direction for the program.
Recent Performance and Season Challenges
This past season has been challenging for NC State, highlighted by a disappointing 31-28 loss to Stanford—a team that entered the game with a modest three victories. This defeat followed a severe 38-14 home loss to Wake Forest, intensifying scrutiny on Doeren’s leadership.
The Wolfpack began the season with optimism fueled by returning talent, including quarterback CJ Bailey, but have struggled to find consistency. Currently, the team holds a record of 3-4 overall and is 1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Contractual Obligations
Doeren, who was under contract until December 31, 2029, may be owed about $9.75 million in remaining salary as part of the termination terms, illustrating the financial implications of this decision for the university.
Looking Ahead
Despite the season’s difficulties, NC State still has potential opportunities with upcoming home games against California, Duke, and Syracuse before concluding the schedule with road matchups at Florida State and North Carolina.
While questions surrounding Doeren’s future had been present prior to this season, particularly concerning his potential retirement after the 2025 season, he had previously stated that he was not contemplating stepping away from coaching.
