Oklahoma Sooners Coaching Changes Following Loss to South Carolina
Shift in Offensive Leadership
Oklahoma has decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, according to various reports on Monday. The first-year tight ends coach, Jason Witten, is anticipated to assume play-calling responsibilities, while Kevin Wilson, a former offensive coordinator at OU, is expected to take on a more significant role as an analyst.
Recent Performance and Implications
This coaching change comes in the wake of a disheartening 42-25 home loss to South Carolina, leaving the Sooners with a record of 4-4 (2-3 SEC). The defeat was marked by a significant gap in performance, as Oklahoma trailed 28-10 at halftime. The only touchdown in the first half came from a defensive play—a pick-six by linebacker Kip Lewis. The offense managed a mere 71 yards compared to South Carolina’s 307 before Oklahoma’s late-game scores, which served only to lessen the margin.
Commenting on the team’s performance, head coach Brent Venables expressed his frustration, stating, “Incredibly pissed at myself and for all of us. Just embarrassing. It’s embarrassing in every way.”
Challenges Under Arbuckle’s Leadership
Arbuckle, 31, arrived at Oklahoma with a background in West Texas coaching and the promise of a rapid ascension similar to former head coach Lincoln Riley. His move to OU was part of a package deal with quarterback John Mateer, with whom he previously worked at Washington State. However, their collaboration has yielded underwhelming results for the Sooners. In 20 starts, Mateer has thrown 27 touchdowns against 18 interceptions, ranking 88th and 63rd nationally in passing efficiency.
The Oklahoma offense has struggled considerably, ranking 79th in scoring last season and dropping further to 108th this season with an average of just 22 points per game. The team also stands at:
- 115th in yards per play (5.18)
- 128th in rushing yards (106.75 per game)
- 98th in explosive plays (fewer than four per game)
Future Considerations for Coach Venables
This mid-season staff reshuffle adds to the scrutiny surrounding Coach Brent Venables. This decision marks his second offensive coordinator change in three seasons, having previously let go of Seth Littrell after seven games in the 2024 season. Venables has a current record of 36-24 at Oklahoma, with a conference record of 19-19. His tenure has fluctuated between poor and decent seasons, highlighting a pattern of inconsistency with records of 6-7 in 2022 and 2024, contrasted with 10-3 finishes in 2023 and 2025.
As Venables navigates this season, he finds himself poised for another significant coordinator hire, with repercussions that could impact his future at the program, especially following his recent extension, which carries a substantial buyout of over $50 million.
