Army General Terminated for Leaking Classified Information
In a significant breach of security protocol, Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, formerly a senior strategist at the Pentagon, has admitted to leaking sensitive information regarding U.S. policies related to Iran and Ukraine. This revelation was reported by Axios on Thursday.
Details of the Investigation
An internal probe at the Pentagon concluded that Sylvia had indeed leaked classified material. The investigation reportedly included video evidence of Sylvia’s admissions following his failure in four polygraph tests. As a result, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth made the decision to terminate the three-star general’s service.
Nature of the Leaks
Sylvia’s unauthorized disclosures reportedly began as early as June 2025. Tools for these leaks included encrypted Signal messages and in-person interactions with reporters at locations such as a diner in Arlington, Virginia. Investigators established that Sylvia used handwritten notes from classified documents to share sensitive information about U.S. military aid to Ukraine.
Consequences and Responses
In light of these findings, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that the case has been referred to the Justice Department for potential prosecution. Parnell emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
“Classified information is not personal property. Leaking it for personal, political or professional gain is a betrayal of the trust placed in those responsible for keeping it.”
He further stated, “Our commitment was not an empty promise. We vowed to find you, and we meant it.”
