EA’s Remastering of Classic Games: A New Era of Game Preservation
High-Quality Visions: The Flagship Offerings
EA has launched a series of remastered classic games that prominently features significantly improved full-motion video sequences, delivering a quality previously not seen. The updates also bring:
- 60 frames-per-second gameplay for smoother visuals.
- A wide range of new .INI tweaks to enhance performance.
- Comprehensive controller support, though some users have reported issues on various forums.
Visual Enhancements and Restoration Efforts
Notably, in the case of Privateer 2, the development team faced challenges in locating the original high-quality FMV scenes. To overcome this, they reached out to Steve Hilliker, the original cinematics director, who happened to possess the tapes and had long wished to apply a fresh color-grade. His efforts led to a thorough remastering and upscaling of the game’s cutscenes.
Similar advancements were made for Wing Commander Prophecy, with additional insights shared about the contributions from GOG in enhancing and restoring this title alongside Road Rash. For the latter, EA successfully re-licensed the original soundtrack for its re-release.
Accessibility for Gamers
The collection of remastered titles is currently available for purchase on both GOG and Steam, with a special offering for existing owners of the classic versions of these games, allowing them to access the remastered versions for free. Notably, none of the individual game titles exceed a price of $5.
The Bigger Picture: Game Preservation Efforts
While EA’s recent moves cannot erase past controversies, they demonstrate how passionate individuals can make substantial contributions to the preservation of video game history. While some of the work on these remasters was voluntarily completed outside standard working hours, EA did allocate some resources to support the restoration as the project unfolded.
Though not devoid of imperfections, these remasters represent a notable step forward in the gaming industry and highlight the importance of preserving classic titles.
