Sony Unveils RIALTO 65: A Cutting-Edge 65mm Camera Extension for the VENICE 2
Sony has officially announced the RIALTO 65, a compact 65mm camera head designed to connect seamlessly to its existing VENICE 2 body, either via a cable or through direct attachment. This innovative system boasts impressive features, including a 9.6K Open Gate readout and the ability to record in 16-bit X-OCN. Scheduled for release in the first half of 2027, this announcement was made during an event at Pinewood Studios.
Specifications of the RIALTO 65
Initially revealed as a development project in June, the RIALTO 65 (model CBK-6510XS) utilizes a sensor measuring 53.75 x 35.83mm and maintains a 1.5:1 aspect ratio—approximately 2.2 times larger than a standard full-frame sensor. This makes it one of the largest sensors currently available in commercial cinema cameras. The head itself weighs about 1.5kg (3.3lb) and features dual base ISO settings at 2500 and 10000, with exceptional dynamic range offering more than 15 stops of latitude at ISO 2500.
Unique Sensor Aspects
In comparison to other digital 65mm sensors, notably the ARRI ALEXA 65 and ALEXA 265 that have traditionally dominated this segment, the RIALTO 65’s sensor adopts a taller format. This height increases the options for anamorphic capture and provides flexibility for post-production reframing. Initially available readout modes include:
- 9.6K 1.5:1 Open Gate, utilizing the entire sensor.
- 9.6K 2.20:1 mode, which has a diagonal of approximately 59mm, better suited for many existing lenses.
Future updates for the VENICE 2 system are expected to introduce additional readout modes, enhancing shooting versatility.
Extension Capabilities
The RIALTO brand name aptly reflects its functionality, as the system allows the camera head to extend away from the body using a detachable cable. Sony provides a standard 4.5m (14.8ft) cable, with an additional optional 12m (39.4ft) variant. In Studio Mode, the head can be directly mounted to the body, thereby functioning as a singular camera unit.
This design opens new avenues for filmmakers. The lightweight head can easily be utilized with gimbals, placed inside vehicle interiors, or mounted onto handheld rigs, while the bulk of the camera system remains stationed elsewhere. The metadata captured during tilt and roll movements adds further value for post-production workflows.
Integrating with the VENICE 2 Workflow
The RIALTO 65 connects directly to the VENICE 2 body for storage, ensuring that all data is recorded on the same AXS cards, employing the familiar 16-bit X-OCN format along with S-Log3 and S-Gamut3 color science. This integration means that existing rental houses that utilize the VENICE 2 package will not need to adjust their workflows significantly, as the accessories and post-production processes remain consistent. The primary aim here seems to be enhancing existing installations rather than introducing an entirely new camera body.
Lens Compatibility and Features
Unlike earlier models, the RIALTO 65 does not come with its own lens mount. Instead, it has been designed for compatibility with third-party lens mount adapters, enabling productions to select the mount that suits their chosen lenses, including those designed for 65mm applications. This enhanced flexibility does require an additional cost and decision-making for the camera crew but allows for a more tailored shooting experience.
For anamorphic cinematography, the RIALTO 65 supports multiple de-squeeze ratios and offers a “Zoom to Fit” feature for precise framing. It also accommodates 11 drop-in ND filters with electronic contacts, allowing density readings to be communicated directly to the VENICE 2. A dedicated ND Filter Kit (CBK-NDK6510) will be made available, though individual filters are not for sale.
Expected Pricing and Release
Both the RIALTO 65 (CBK-6510XS) and the associated CBK-NDK6510 ND Filter Kit, along with the optional 12m cable (CBK-12C6510), are anticipated to arrive in early 2027. While specific pricing details have not yet been released, previous extension systems such as the full-frame VENICE 2 Extension System Mini had a launch price of $25,000.

The RIALTO 65 system represents a significant addition to Sony’s cinema offerings, combining a state-of-the-art sensor with the flexibility of old and new mounts. As the release approaches, industry professionals may consider how this new system could affect their framing techniques and overall production workflows.
