Market Overview
U.S. equity futures displayed a mixed response on Thursday following a significant drop in oil prices, alongside clarifications regarding the Democrats’ midterm election victories. Futures for the S&P 500 decreased by 0.2%, while Nasdaq-100 futures saw a decline of 1.1%. Conversely, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures increased by 213 points, or 0.4%.
Earnings Reports Impacting Investor Sentiment
Following Wednesday’s market close, prominent chipmaker Qualcomm announced earnings that exceeded analyst expectations but saw its stock fall by 6.5%. In contrast, artificial intelligence-driven advertising firm AppLovin experienced a robust increase, soaring nearly 24% after reporting results that surpassed estimates and offering optimistic future guidance.
Oil Price Influence on the Market
On Wednesday, a noticeable drop in oil prices contributed to a rally in the stock market, with West Texas Intermediate crude futures declining over 8% to settle at $88.12 per barrel. This decline aided the Dow in achieving its most significant gain since April 2025, climbing by over 1,500 points, or 3%, while the S&P 500 recorded a 1.6% increase.
Political Climate and Its Effect on Stocks
The stock market’s dynamics were also influenced by comments from Vice President JD Vance, who attributed Republican electoral losses in part to the Iran war during the midterm elections. Investors reacted to results indicating that Democrats secured significant control in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as various governorships.
International Market Movements
In Asia, the Nikkei 225 index rose by 0.49%, while the Topix index gained over 2%. South Korea’s Kospi experienced a decline of 2.33%, alongside a 1.24% drop in the tech-focused Kosdaq. Meanwhile, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index increased by 1.39%.
Investor Sentiment and Future Outlook
The trading activity on Wednesday reflected a recalibration by investors following the election results. Stocks in consumer discretionary sectors, led by Walmart, saw notable gains, with the retail giant rising more than 3%. However, concerns about the data center sector emerged post-election, particularly regarding intensified regulation proposals after Democratic victories, exemplified by Gina Hinojosa’s win for Governor in Texas.
Jordan Watson, a portfolio manager at Tandem Investment Advisors, cautioned against viewing the market rally as a definitive trend. He noted, “We may be headed for more volatility as investors digest the election results and potential policy implications. I wouldn’t view [Wednesday’s equity trading] as an all-clear signal, but rather a call for some sanity around the amount of capital being poured into the AI infrastructure build-out and whether those investments will generate the returns investors expect.”
Looking Ahead
As Thursday progresses, market participants are expected to closely monitor the forthcoming jobless claims data. Additionally, the October nonfarm payrolls report is anticipated on Friday, which is likely to provide valuable insights into the state of the labor market.
A range of earnings reports is also expected, including Tapestry, Kimberly-Clark, and ConocoPhillips in the morning, followed by Airbnb and Akamai later in the day.
