Iran’s Warnings of Retaliation Against U.S. and Israeli Military Actions
Tehran has issued stern warnings regarding its potential military response to an uptick in air operations by the United States and Israel. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Iran’s leaders have communicated the possibility of striking a varied list of targets, which notably includes not only military installations but also civilian infrastructure in the region.
Expanded Target List in Iranian Threats
Public statements and diplomatic channels from Iranian officials indicate that Tehran is prepared to launch attacks on:
- American military bases
- U.S. naval vessels
- Natural energy infrastructure
- Gas pipelines
- Airports
- Other civilian facilities in the Persian Gulf
Moreover, Iran is potentially considering the inclusion of its nuclear arsenal in its defense strategy. Mohammad-Saleh Jokar, head of the Iranian Parliament’s International Affairs Committee, stated, “The Islamic Republic’s authorities, in defense of the country and for the purpose of deterrence, to permit the use of deterrent weapons, including nuclear weapons, in the event of a US attack on Iran.” This indicates a significant shift towards embracing deterrent capabilities that could heighten existing tensions.
In the event of a U.S. attack, Jokar also warned that nations supporting U.S. operations could expect a “harsh response” from Tehran.
Iran’s Military Capabilities and Strategy
Analysts suggest that Iran maintains a substantial arsenal, purportedly consisting of hundreds of thousands of ballistic missiles. The country has resumed production in indisclosed underground sites, bolstering its military readiness even after previous operations such as Operation Roaring Lion and Operation Epic Fury. Despite suffering losses in its military capabilities — with reports indicating that about 90% of its drones, missiles, and naval industry were damaged — Iran appears intent on leveraging its remaining stockpile to deter further military action against it.
Recent confrontations have already resulted in significant damage to U.S. facilities, as well as infrastructure across the UAE and Gulf nations, underscoring Tehran’s resolve to inflict pain in retaliation for hostile actions.
Concerns over Military Overreach
Iranian experts express concerns about the potential risks of overextending their military capacity in response to perceived threats. Sina Toossi, an expert at the Center for International Policy, noted, “The consensus in Tehran now believes that deterrence requires imposing immediate, sustained, and substantial costs on its adversaries.” However, Saeid Golkarat cautioned that Iran must judiciously manage its missile resources to avoid implications of overreaching.
Washington Institute expert Farzin Nadimi warned that while Iran possesses capabilities to significantly damage regional infrastructure, aggressive retaliation could lead to reciprocal attacks that could devastate Iran’s own assets.
Stalled Diplomacy and Rising Tensions
As diplomatic negotiations remain stagnant, tensions are escalating. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly signaled that failure to reach an agreement may lead to military action following the upcoming midterm elections. Concurrently, Israel has intensified its military preparations, with indications of possible strikes against Iranian targets – actions reportedly influenced by U.S. directives.
Highlighting the precarious nature of the situation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a recent op-ed, “New attacks will put civilian lives and the well-being of all regional states and the global economy at great risk,” indicating a broader concern over the consequences of military escalation in the region.
