U.S. Government Crypto Transfers Surpass $100 Million
Recent data from blockchain analytics firm Arkham reveals significant cryptocurrency movements by wallets associated with the U.S. government.
Details of the Transactions
On Tuesday, approximately $100 million in cryptocurrency was transferred from government-linked wallets. The transactions included:
- Bitcoin Transfer: 833.599 BTC, valued at roughly $71.6 million, was sent to two unspecified addresses. Shortly after, these coins were redirected to addresses identified as Coinbase Prime deposit locations.
- BNB Transfer: A different government-identified wallet transmitted around 40,285 BNB, worth about $31.63 million, to another unlabeled address (0x7F68F63fB3A9CCCf352409603421E0A574FbAD90), which subsequently sent the entire amount to yet another address (0x6fB3Fe7b7E78AbB84CE007cBC7412C850B15A579).
Source of the Funds
The Bitcoin involved in these transactions originated from:
- 568.7 BTC classified as forfeited funds linked to Potapenko/Turogin.
- 264.9 BTC seized during the Bitfinex hacking investigation.
Meanwhile, the BNB came from assets acquired through enforcement actions related to Alameda Research.
Current Government Crypto Holdings
The U.S. government maintains approximately $27.5 billion in cryptocurrency, which has been accumulated exclusively through law enforcement actions. Notably, there have been no instances of taxpayer funds being used for direct purchases of cryptocurrency.
Market Reactions and Perspectives
Such substantial transfers typically ignite speculation regarding a potential sale. However, market observers, including commentator Jose Rosell, have noted that these transfers should not be construed as pre-sale actions. Rosell stated, “A transfer is not the same as a sale. Under a March 2025 executive order, bitcoin forfeited to the government is meant to be held in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.”
