WhatsApp is currently experimenting with an innovative feature allowing users to expand images in the app’s photo editor. This functionality is gradually becoming accessible to select users on TestFlight and the primary app.
WhatsApp Trials AI-Enhanced Photo Expansion Feature
Users on select iPhones who have access to Apple’s AI tools can now utilize a feature called Extend, which enables them to pinch or drag images to enlarge them beyond their standard dimensions.
This advancement, similar to features found in AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and professional services like Adobe Photoshop, is being integrated within WhatsApp’s platform.
As reported by WABetaInfo, a new AI-assisted photo expansion tool from Meta is being introduced, though it is currently available only to a limited group, mostly those involved in WhatsApp’s beta testing via TestFlight.
“When users select a photo in their chats, WhatsApp opens the drawing editor. Here, they can choose to apply some AI effect to improve it. Among these, users can find a new option to expand their photos. Once users select this option, Meta AI takes a few seconds to analyze the photo and generate the expanded version. Once the process is complete, WhatsApp shows the expanded photo in the drawing editor, and users can choose to send it. Note that this feature is also compatible with status updates.”
If users are dissatisfied with the generated result, they can easily tap the undo button to revert to the original image and attempt the expansion once more for a different outcome.

As with many beta features released by WhatsApp, it remains uncertain when this photo expansion tool will be rolled out to a wider audience.
However, it has already reached some users on the Android beta and appears to be accessible to a select group on the public iOS version, suggesting a broader rollout may occur soon.
