YouTube’s Strategy to Compete with Netflix: Exclusive Programming and Ad Revenue Insights
YouTube Aims for TV Audiences Amidst Netflix Rivalry
YouTube is ramping up its efforts to capture living-room audiences by launching exclusive shows tailored for its creators. This initiative marks a strategic pivot that heightens competition with Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX).
As anticipation grows around Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) impending third-quarter earnings report, speculation has begun regarding whether YouTube’s advertising revenues will surpass the formidable $12 billion mark.
Investments in Exclusive Content
During the recent second-quarter earnings call, YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, Philipp Schindler, highlighted the platform’s commitment to exclusive programming. He stated, “We have a slate of new and returning creator shows that are coming exclusively to YouTube.”
Schindler also indicated that YouTube is experiencing growth in its subscription sector, which is outpacing advertising revenue. The increase is particularly pronounced with offerings in YouTube Music and YouTube Premium, which are becoming increasingly popular on living room screens.
YouTube’s Viewing Share Dominates Over Netflix
According to a Nielsen report released in September 2026, YouTube achieved a significant milestone, accounting for 14.2% of U.S. TV viewership in July—almost double the 7.8% share held by Netflix.
Additionally, Alphabet’s second-quarter report revealed a 13% year-over-year increase in YouTube’s advertising revenue, reaching $11.06 billion. This surge was bolstered by both direct-response and brand advertising efforts.
CFO Anat Ashkenazi attributed some of this growth to advertising connected to high-profile events, such as the World Cup.
Speculations on Q3 Advertising Revenue
In the lead-up to the third-quarter earnings report, traders on the Polymarket platform have assigned a 19% likelihood that YouTube’s advertising revenue for Q3 will exceed $12 billion. The chances increase to 20% for revenues surpassing $11.8 billion, 28% for beating $11.6 billion, and 69% for exceeding $11.4 billion.
For revenues above $11.2 billion, the probability stands at 79%.
