With the recent unveiling of the new MacBook Pro, a significant highlight was the reintroduction of the illuminated Apple logo. While this feature was met with enthusiasm during the announcement, some users might prefer to disable it. Below is a comprehensive guide on how to turn the glowing logo off.
Disabling the Apple Logo Illumination
The latest iteration of the MacBook Pro, featuring the PROLED XDR Display, brings back the iconic illuminated Apple logo after it was absent for a decade. Unlike its predecessors, which utilized backlight from the display itself, the new design of the MacBook Pro relies on an innovative approach without a backlighting system.
As noted in a review by Chance Miller, the brightness of the illuminated logo correlates with the built-in display’s brightness while also adjusting to ambient light conditions. In addition, when the MacBook Pro is closed, the logo appears as polished metal, maintaining the aesthetic established with the 2016 redesign.
Developer Gui Rambo shared insights on X regarding the technology controlling the glowing logo:
Apple has now provided a support document explaining the functionality of the illuminating logo and how to deactivate it for users who desire such a setting.
The Apple logo behind the built-in display is illuminated whenever the Mac is awake. It automatically dims or brightens based on the brightness level of the built-in screen and the lighting conditions detected by the computer’s ambient light sensor. For all screen-brightness levels, the Apple logo will be dimmer in a dim room and brighter in a bright room.
For those wishing to keep the logo inactive, the following command can be executed in the Terminal application (administrator access is required):
sudo defaults write com.apple.CoreBrightness LEBacklightMode -int 0
If users later decide to reactivate the illuminated logo, they will need to run this command:
sudo defaults delete com.apple.CoreBrightness LEBacklightMode
It’s important to note that reinstalling macOS will reactivate the illumination feature automatically.
