Nithya Raman Elected as Los Angeles Mayor

Councilmember Nithya Raman will take on the role of mayor in Los Angeles following her victory over incumbent Karen Bass in the November general election, as projected by CBS News.

Election Outcome

Raman’s win aligns with a broader trend of Democratic successes across the nation on Election Day. Speaking to her supporters in the Fairfax District, she emphasized her commitment to restoring public trust in City Hall. “My goal is to earn your trust,” Raman stated, pointing to her intentions to fulfill the promises made during her campaign.

Karen Bass Concedes

Following the election results, Bass issued a concession statement. In a call to Raman, she congratulated her on the victory. “While this is not the outcome we hoped for, the people of Los Angeles have spoken,” Bass remarked. She expressed her gratitude to her supporters and assured a smooth transition for the new administration.

Raman’s Vision for Los Angeles

During her acceptance speech, Raman acknowledged Bass’s long-standing service to the city and expressed her desire to work collaboratively for a successful transition. “We love this city. We want to make it an incredible, incredible place,” she said. Raman, a Democratic socialist, gained significant momentum in her campaign, particularly after previously defeating Spencer Pratt in the primary elections.

Background on Raman and Bass

Nithya Raman first entered the political spotlight as a city council member after being elected in 2020. She previously co-chaired the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Homelessness Committee and co-founded a nonprofit focused on homelessness advocacy. One notable achievement in her term was the successful push to cap annual rent increases for tenants in older rent-stabilized apartments.

Karen Bass served as LA’s 43rd mayor, having a career that spans more than two decades in public service. She rose to prominence as a congresswoman and made history as the first Black woman to lead a state legislative body in California. Bass announced that this election would be her final campaign for office.

Public Reactions

In light of Raman’s victory, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell praised both candidates. His statement expressed a commitment to enhancing public safety under the new administration, focusing on professional and compassionate policing for all residents.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Raman is determined to earn the trust of all Angelenos, regardless of their voting preferences. “I want to tell every single Angeleno out there, I am going to work so hard,” she affirmed. As she prepares to take office, Raman’s focus will include initiatives that benefit both tenants and small businesses in the city.
