Market Update: Bitcoin Fluctuates Below $80K, Altcoins Drop
Bitcoin and Altcoin Trends
Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a decline, slipping below the $80,000 mark to approximately $79,700, reflecting a 0.4% decrease since midnight UTC on Tuesday. Additionally, the second-largest cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), saw a 0.5% dip, now trading at $2,490.55.
Further compounding the market’s decline, the DeFi index (DFX) decreased by 1.8%, contrasting with its performance the previous day when it was the only index to show gains.
Wider Economic Indicators
U.S. stock index futures trended lower in anticipation of upcoming earnings reports from major tech firms. In Asia, technology shares rallied, particularly in South Korea, where the Kospi index rose by 3.1%. However, this surge did not extend to the cryptocurrency market.
The price of oil also saw an increase, with U.S. crude nearing $102 per barrel. This volatility comes just as the Federal Reserve commences a two-day meeting, with expectations leaning towards maintaining interest rates, as indicated by CME’s FedWatch tool, which suggests a 90% probability of no rate hikes at this meeting.
Derivatives Market Overview
In the derivatives space, trading volume surged 18% across crypto futures, amounting to $152 billion over the past 24 hours. However, open interest (OI) only increased slightly by 0.95%, while liquidations fell by 13% to $133 million. The taker long/short ratio stands at a near equilibrium, with long and short positions closely matched at 49.54% to 50.46%.
Token Performance and Flow
- Despite a slight 1.1% decrease in Bitcoin and Ether, their futures open interest experienced a modest rise.
- Solana (SOL) led with a 3.6% increase in open interest despite a price decline of 1.91%.
- SOXL, linked to a triple-leveraged semiconductor ETF, saw an outflow of money with an open interest decline of 7.4%.
- Oil futures funding rates remain negative, indicating a persistent preference for short positions.
- Options trading revealed significant interest in the $72,000 put option for Bitcoin, set to expire on December 25th.
Altcoins and Emerging Tokens
Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies showed relative resilience, with Dash (DASH) gaining 1.8% and Zcash (ZEC) increasing by 0.5%. A notable proposal from Zcash’s co-founder aims to adjust the network’s funding structure.
Conversely, many DeFi tokens saw a reversal of earlier gains. Aave (AAVE) fell by 3.6%, while the token SKY from the previous MakerDAO project lost 3.9%. This trend reflects Aave’s lack of buybacks since April.
Tokens associated with AI technologies also struggled despite positive performance in Asian tech stocks. Render (RENDER) and The Graph (GRT) each saw declines of over 2%.
Meanwhile, the Altcoin Season index has shifted slightly upward, moving from 53 to 57 out of 100, signaling a possible increased interest in altcoins.
