Bitcoin Falls Below $80,000 Amidst Market Liquidations
On Saturday, Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a noticeable decline, slipping below $80,000 as over $200 million in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated within a brief one-hour window. Notably, the majority of this liquidation—approximately $191.33 million—was accounted for by traders anticipating rising prices.
Market Overview
Ethereum (ETH) also saw a decrease in value, parallel to Bitcoin’s trend. According to BeInCrypto Markets, the total capitalization of the cryptocurrency market fell by 4.06% in the past 24 hours, landing at $2.72 trillion. The liquidation data reveals the distribution of incurred losses across traders.
Bullish Traders Suffer Significant Losses
This one-hour liquidation was part of a larger trend, with Coinglass reporting total liquidations reaching $837.12 million over a 24-hour span, affecting 227,681 traders. A striking 82.8% of these liquidations, equating to $693.05 million, were from long positions, while short sellers experienced losses totaling $144.07 million.
In terms of individual contributions, Bitcoin led with $232.55 million in liquidations, followed by Ethereum at $181.51 million, with long positions making up more than 93% in each case.
Current Bitcoin Valuation
At the time of this report, Bitcoin was trading at $79,464, representing a 2.48% decrease over 24 hours and marking its lowest price point since September 18. Altcoins were similarly affected, with Ethereum dropping by 4.71% to $2,288.73 and Solana (SOL) losing 5.20% to $98.92. Among the top 10 cryptocurrencies, Zcash (ZEC) showed the most considerable decline, plummeting 8.39% to $1,124.36.
Caution for Corporate Treasuries
Bitcoin’s recent drop places its price below the average cost that corporate treasuries paid for their holdings, according to estimates from Glassnode. This situation implies that many companies currently face unrealized losses in their cryptocurrency investments.
Analyst Benjamin Cowen noted potential bearish trends, suggesting that a weekly close below $83,000 on October 25 could solidify a downward trajectory, while a recovery above that level could change the outlook.
Market Analysis Insights
BeInCrypto highlighted $77,876 as a critical support level for Bitcoin, with further support found between $76,700 and $72,500. In earlier market activity, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization had fallen to $2.69 trillion on October 8, but managed to recover slightly to the current $2.72 trillion. Upcoming events, including the Federal Reserve’s meetings on October 27 and 28, as well as the release of September’s Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data on October 29, are pivotal for market sentiment.
Additionally, Brent crude prices reached $116.72 on Friday, indicating potential inflationary pressures in the near term. How the market responds to these developments and whether buyers can defend the identified support levels could play a significant role in Bitcoin’s trajectory moving forward.
