On October 29, 2026, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) executed searches at 25 locations throughout Tamil Nadu, including the residence of former DMK Minister K.N. Nehru in Tiruchirapalli. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into a large-scale cash-for-jobs scam allegedly involving several individuals, including Nehru.
Details of the Operation
The search operation began at approximately 7:00 AM, led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Nehru was reportedly present at his residence during the search.
This latest intervention follows a recent decision by the Madras High Court, which permitted the DVAC to pursue the investigation into these serious allegations. The DVAC previously conducted searches at Nehru’s residence and related locations in Chennai in September 2026.
Background of Allegations
The investigations were prompted after the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) lodged a formal complaint detailing instances of corruption in the hiring processes for positions within the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department. Allegations involve irregularities in the recruitment of 2,538 roles, including Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, and Town Planning Officers during the period Nehru served as Municipal Administration Minister.
Reactions from Political Figures
In a related development, DMK President M.K. Stalin criticized Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, claiming that the latter’s administration has contributed to an unsafe environment in Tamil Nadu. Stalin accused Vijay of employing publicity tactics to deflect attention from serious issues, including law and order in the state.
“His vendetta politics will be defeated in the court of law and in the court of public opinion,” stated Stalin.
Furthermore, Stalin insisted that the DMK would not be intimidated by ongoing raids and arrests, describing them as exaggerated performances aimed at influencing the upcoming Tiruchi East byelection.
