Escape Details
Authorities in Tennessee are actively searching for Jacob Morley, a 28-year-old convicted murderer, who escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville on Sunday night, around 11:30 PM. Morley’s disappearance was reported after prison officials realized he was unaccounted for.
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC), surveillance footage revealed that Morley managed to slip through a perimeter fence while dressed in his prison uniform. However, specifics about how he breached the fence have not been disclosed.
Stolen Vehicle and Sightings
Investigators tracked Morley’s movements after the escape and found that at approximately 1:00 AM on Monday, he stole a truck. Footage captured him driving past the Hornbeak Fire Department, situated roughly 15 miles from the correctional facility, at around 1:18 AM.
In response to the escape, prison officials have offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to Morley’s capture. Law enforcement agencies in the region have conducted extensive searches in and around the prison, which is located about 90 miles north of Memphis, in a remote part of the state.
Criminal Background
Jacob Morley is serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of his coworker, Cody Birchfield, in 2022. Birchfield’s body was discovered concealed in a box beneath Morley’s home in Carter County, Tennessee, following his absence for several weeks.
In addition to murder, Morley faced charges that included aggravated burglary, evidence tampering, vandalism, and evading arrest. His encounter with law enforcement in connection with Birchfield led to a police chase that concluded in North Carolina.
Prison Environment
The Northwest Correctional Complex, capable of housing 1,776 male inmates, has been the focus of scrutiny due to previous incidents of violence among inmates and between inmates and staff. Recent investigations resulted in numerous indictments for various violent offenses occurring at the facility.
Additionally, a systemic report released in 2023 highlighted significant staffing shortages at the complex, with a staggering 61% vacancy rate for correctional officers reported during that fiscal year.
