Capcom’s Vision for Resident Evil: A Decade of Evolution and Future Plans
The Narrative Journey of Resident Evil
In a recent discussion with Yahoo Japan, Jun Takeuchi, the executive producer behind the beloved Resident Evil franchise, shared insights into the series’ development trajectory. He emphasized the evolving nature of the game’s overarching narrative, which was not established from the outset but has progressively developed with each installment.
Takeuchi explained that during the planning of the Resident Evil 2 Remake, a ten-year branding strategy was devised. “The series’ story wasn’t planned out from the beginning; it expanded with each new game,” he noted, indicating the complexity of integrating new narratives into the existing lore.
A Future with an End?
Takeuchi expressed that the release of Resident Evil: Requiem marked a significant milestone in the franchise. He stated, “With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years.” This statement may elicit mixed feelings among fans who cherish the franchise and its characters, suggesting a potential shift in the series’ direction.
This change does not preclude the possibility of character reappearances in fresh narratives, leaving room for speculation about the franchise’s future.
What Lies Ahead for Resident Evil
Looking to the future, Takeuchi assured fans that the franchise would continue to grow. “I can’t say, because it would spoil the fun for everyone, but there won’t be just one. There will be multiple titles,” he confirmed, hinting at several forthcoming games without divulging specific details.
Franchise Success and Upcoming Releases
Since the resurgence of the series with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Capcom has enjoyed significant commercial success. The Resident Evil 2 Remake ranks as the highest-selling title within the franchise, while Resident Evil: Requiem has surpassed $500 million in revenue since its launch earlier this year, contributing notably to console sales in Japan.
Notably, in the first half of Capcom’s 2027 fiscal year, several Resident Evil titles—namely Resident Evil 2 Remake, RE7, RE4, RE3, and Requiem—made it to the top ten best-sellers, underscoring the franchise’s importance to the company’s portfolio.
Upcoming Projects for Fans
Resident Evil enthusiasts have much to anticipate, including the upcoming Code Veronica remake set for release early next year. Additionally, screenwriter Haris Orkin has hinted at a potential story mode DLC for Requiem, which may involve the character of Spencer.
Furthermore, the recent Resident Evil film by Zach Cregger has received positive feedback, both critically and at the box office, although a sequel remains uncertain despite existing storyline ideas from Cregger.
