Is the Next Bitcoin Bull Market Already Here? An Analysis
Michael Saylor, the executive chairman of Strategy, previously known as MicroStrategy, has posited that the next Bitcoin bull market is in motion. His argument is primarily based on Bitcoin’s price recovery after touching its lowest point in the recent bear market, specifically when it rebounded from the 200-week moving average.
Despite some reservations regarding the reliance on price action as evidence, there is a strong case to be made for Saylor’s stance that a new bull cycle may be underway.
Changing Dynamics in Profit and Loss Selling
Saylor’s reference to Bitcoin’s 200-week moving average includes an understanding of Bitcoin’s historical price patterns. On June 30, Bitcoin recorded a low of $58,525, which was approximately 6.5% below this moving average—an area historically associated with market bottoming in previous downturns.
While using this average is useful, it is not infallible. For instance, in 2022, Bitcoin dipped significantly below this average, indicating that falling beneath a moving average does not guarantee immediate recovery. Therefore, additional indicators should also be examined to provide a clearer picture of market conditions.
At the June lows, the ratio of Bitcoin sold at a loss to those sold at a profit was disproportionately negative—12 to 1. However, this trend reversed by late August, aligning with bull market characteristics where sales at a profit overtook those at a loss. Currently, profit-takers are outpacing loss-takers by four to one.
Resurgence of Long-Term Holders
In concert with these metrics, long-term Bitcoin holders began resuming net buying in early July. This shift further suggests a transition from a bearish to a bullish market environment, supporting the idea that the current phase is part of an emerging bull trend.
Anticipation of the Upcoming Bitcoin Halving
Another significant factor that could play a role in the potential for a new bull market is the anticipated Bitcoin halving, expected to take place in early April 2028. This event will reduce the production of new bitcoins, historically leading to considerable pre-halving price rallies ranging from 100% gains to longer-term upward trends.
Historical analysis indicates that previous bull runs often commenced between 400 to 518 days before a halving event. Therefore, the upcoming period could offer further bullish momentum, beginning as early as late 2026.
Investment Considerations
Investors contemplating entry into the Bitcoin market should approach with caution. Current recommendations from analysts at The Motley Fool suggest exploring a diverse portfolio of equities, with Bitcoin notably absent from their top ten investment picks at this time.
It’s important for potential investors to weigh their options judiciously. Historical data illustrates that certain stocks have yielded impressive returns; for example, if an individual had invested $1,000 in Netflix on December 17, 2004, their portfolio would have grown to an astonishing $334,793 by now. This underscores the importance of thorough research and strategic investing.
In summary, while signs suggest a potential upswing in Bitcoin prices as indicated by positive movement in the market dynamics and upcoming events like the halving, investors are advised to remain informed and consider various investment avenues to optimize their portfolios.
