Des Moines Post Office Incident: USPS Employee Shoots Two Colleagues

DES MOINES, Iowa — Early Thursday morning, a shooting occurred at the United States Postal Service (USPS) processing and distribution facility located at 1165 Second Ave. The incident resulted in two individuals being shot and a third person sustaining injuries in a fall during the chaos.

Details of the Incident

Des Moines Police received reports of the shooting around 9:10 a.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement agencies. Officers arrived at the scene within three minutes and apprehended the suspect, an adult female employee of the facility, approximately 11 minutes later under the Interstate 235 bridge.

Victims and Medical Response

The victims, all employees at the postal facility, include two females and one male. Fortunately, none of their injuries are considered life-threatening. They are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Sergeant Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department stated, “Our response was part of a massive effort to address the situation swiftly and thoroughly.”

Community and School Response

In the aftermath of the shooting, Des Moines Public Schools entered a temporary lockdown, referred to as “Secure Status,” to ensure the safety of students and staff. Schools such as Carver Elementary, the DMPS Welcome Center, and the Central Nutrition Center were not allowing entry or exit while police conducted their investigation.

The lockdown was lifted shortly after police confirmed the situation was under control, allowing normal operations to resume by 10:00 a.m.

Reactions from Officials

Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen expressed gratitude for the rapid response from law enforcement, stating, “I’m thankful for the incredibly rapid and effective response from our Des Moines Police Department and partnering agencies who helped bring a swift and decisive end to a dangerous situation.” She emphasized concern for the well-being of those injured and others affected by this violent act.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also commented on the situation, saying, “I’m in contact with the Department of Public Safety regarding a shooting at the Main Post Office in Des Moines. The suspected shooter is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. Our prayers are with everyone involved. Grateful for the prompt actions of those on the scene.”

Congressman Zach Nunn remarked, “I’m closely monitoring reports of the shooting at the USPS facility in Des Moines. My prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragedy.”

Continuation of Investigation

The investigation into the motives behind the shooting is ongoing. Authorities have yet to disclose what led to this tragic event.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Conclusion

The incident at the USPS facility in Des Moines serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictability of workplace violence. Community leaders and residents are hoping for a thorough investigation and a sense of normalcy to return to the area.
