Google Unveils the Connected Apps Platform for Enhanced Developer Integration
In a recent announcement, Google introduced the Connected Apps Platform, which aims to streamline the integration of various applications into the Gemini and Search ecosystems. This new initiative is designed to provide developers with a unified method to incorporate their services into Google’s platforms.
Current Ecosystem and Integrations
The Connected Apps Platform currently supports a variety of third-party services including popular names like Adobe, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Ticketmaster, now exceeding fifty integrations available directly through the Gemini application. Among the latest additions is a new partnership with Calm, set to launch in the coming weeks.
This expansion complements existing first-party offerings such as Google Workspace, Photos, and YouTube, establishing a comprehensive ecosystem for users looking to access diverse functionalities within a single application.
Developer-Friendly Features
To facilitate this process, Google emphasizes a “build once and reach high-intent users” approach. Developers interested in creating Connected Apps must utilize either a cloud-hosted Microservices Platform (MCP) server or an Android MCP, leveraging the AppFunctions APIs. Following this, they can register, test, and submit their applications through the new Google Connected Console. This tool provides valuable insights, allowing developers to monitor traffic, latency, and error rates while managing brand identity effectively.
Integration with Google Search
In a significant enhancement, Google plans to extend the availability of existing Connected Apps beyond the Gemini app, allowing them to be accessible through Google Search as well. Developers will have the option to decide whether their application is featured in Search, within the Gemini app, or both, contributing to improved visibility and user engagement.
As part of an ongoing redesign, the Gemini app has also introduced a new “Customize” feature, further enhancing user experience.
Getting Started with the Preview
Developers interested in participating in the preview of the Connected Apps Platform can sign up via the Google Developer’s portal. Access to this initiative will be rolled out in phases over the coming months, allowing more developers to engage and contribute to the platform.
