Search for Escaped Convict Jacob Morley Continues in Marion, Illinois
Background on Jacob Morley’s Escape
Jacob Morley, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee. His escape was confirmed late Sunday night, and authorities stated he was unaccounted for around 11:30 PM.
Discovery of the Stolen Vehicle
Shortly after his escape, Morley was reported to have stolen a work truck. This truck was recovered on Tuesday in Marion, Illinois, a town located roughly 100 miles from the prison. Marion Police Chief David Fitts revealed that there is no evidence connecting Morley to the town.
“What we have seen kind of leads us in the direction that he’s not still here. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve stopped looking,” Fitts stated during a press conference.
No Connections to Marion
According to Chief Fitts, Morley has no prior links to Marion or the surrounding southern Illinois area. “There’s really nowhere for him to go here where he wouldn’t be recognized. His face is all over the news,” he added. Speculating on the circumstances that led Morley to Marion, he noted that the major interstate, I-57, runs through the town, which could explain Morley’s stopping there.
Details of Morley’s Crimes
In February 2025, Morley was convicted on several charges, including first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, after he was found guilty of killing his co-worker Cody Birchfield in 2022. Birchfield’s body was discovered concealed in a metal box at Morley’s residence, as detailed in court documents.
Carrie Norman, Birchfield’s sister, expressed her fears surrounding Morley’s escape, saying, “It feels like a scary movie.” She noted, “The family has to go back through the experience — once again, because you don’t know where he’s at, but you know what he’s capable of.”
Increased Reward for Information
In response to Morley’s escape, authorities have significantly raised the reward for information leading to his capture. The reward has escalated from $2,500 to $15,000, reflecting the combined efforts of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Tennessee governor’s office.
Public Safety Precautions
Chief Fitts has urged the public to remain vigilant but also to avoid confronting Morley if he is spotted. “This is really frustrating that we can’t find him. Somebody will eventually, I have no doubt in my mind… But, and I just want to let our people know that, again, don’t approach him. Call 911. We’ll handle it,” he advised.
Investigation into the Escape
Current investigations are ongoing regarding the circumstances of Morley’s escape. Officials have stated that he breached the perimeter fence of the correctional facility while wearing his Tennessee Department of Correction uniform.
