Effective Standing Exercises to Strengthen Your Core Post-Menopause
As women navigate through menopause and post-menopause, they encounter various physical changes that can affect their overall health and body composition. Symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, and mood fluctuations are common. Moreover, the risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis increases during this time. One significant change often reported is the development of unwanted abdominal fat, commonly referred to as “menopause belly.”
However, there’s good news. Engaging in specific exercises can help bolster your core strength and improve your abdominal shape. Shanna Missett Nelson, CEO and chief choreographer at Jazzercise, Inc., emphasizes that while targeted exercise can enhance your core, it cannot specifically reduce belly fat. Instead, a holistic approach to body composition and fitness is essential at this stage of life.
According to Nelson, “For women over 60, I think it’s really important to understand that strengthening your abs and changing body composition are two different things. These exercises can absolutely help build a stronger, firmer core, but we can’t spot-reduce belly fat. That doesn’t mean body composition can’t change after 60. It can. But the way we train needs to become more intentional.”
To support women during this transitional phase, she suggests blending functional movement with strength training and high-intensity intervals, which can improve muscle retention and cardiovascular fitness crucial for daily activities.
Four Standing Exercises for Core Strength
-
Standing Abductions
Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, hands on hips, or holding onto a sturdy chair for support. Activate your core and shift your weight to your left leg. With your right leg straight and toes pointed forward, lift your leg out to the side. Hold the position momentarily before returning to the starting position. Repeat on the opposite side.
