Introducing Cloud Rebuild: A New Recovery Option for Windows 11
Overview of Cloud Rebuild
Microsoft has unveiled a novel recovery feature called Cloud Rebuild for Windows 11, designed to facilitate a complete reinstallation of the operating system. This new tool effectively reinstalls Windows 11 by downloading a fresh system image and the necessary drivers directly from Windows Update, even in instances where the system is unable to boot.
Deployment and Access
Cloud Rebuild is packaged with the optional preview update, KB5127936, which was released on October 28, targeting the Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2. The rollout of this feature is gradual. If the operating system remains operational, users can locate Cloud Rebuild under Settings > System > Recovery labeled as “Rebuild PC.” Conversely, if the system is unable to load correctly after several failed attempts, users are directed to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), where they can find Cloud Rebuild in the Troubleshoot menu.
Enhanced Features of Cloud Rebuild
Previously, the “Reset this PC” option included a Cloud download mode, but Cloud Rebuild takes a more comprehensive approach. It not only reinstalls Windows 11 but also retrieves the necessary drivers, ensuring that the reinstall does not depend on any remnants of the corrupted operating system. However, users should be aware that this process results in a clean slate: it reformats the system drive, resulting in the removal of all applications, user settings, local files, and user accounts. Only data synchronized with cloud services like OneDrive will be retained.
Additional Features for Security and Administration
For those transferring ownership of a device, Cloud Rebuild provides a ‘sanitize mode,’ which securely erases the drive before reinstallation. Additionally, IT administrators can initiate the rebuild process remotely using the Recovery CSP, enhancing support capabilities across organizations.
Requirements for Operation
For Cloud Rebuild to function correctly, WinRE must be operational, and the PC must maintain an Internet connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, utilizing a network driver provided by the manufacturer. The recent update also allows WinRE to leverage existing Wi-Fi profiles saved in Windows. However, Microsoft warns that the rebuild process may fail if the required device drivers are not available through Windows Update. Historically, WinRE has had reliability issues, with a previous update in October 2025 causing unresponsiveness in keyboards and mice.
