Nintendo’s Switch 2 Faces Sales Decline Amid Price Hikes
In the fiscal second quarter, Nintendo experienced a significant decline in sales of its flagship gaming console, the Switch 2. The company reported that during the three-month period ending September 30, 2025, it sold 2.67 million units—a 41% drop compared to the same timeframe last year. This figure also reflects a decrease from 3.82 million units sold in the previous quarter.
Impact of Price Increases
This sales slump follows recent price hikes implemented by Nintendo in the United States, Canada, and Japan. These increases come as a response to surging costs associated with memory components, which are integral to the console’s performance. The ongoing supply shortages and high demand for memory chips have led to a notable rise in prices across the industry.
Despite this decline, Nintendo maintains its sales forecast for the Switch 2, targeting 16.5 million units by the close of the fiscal year in March 2027. The company’s revenue for the quarter amounted to 448.2 billion Japanese yen (approximately $2.8 billion), which fell short of analysts’ expectations of 481.37 billion yen. Additionally, the net profit reported was 73.5 billion yen, below the anticipated 82.16 billion yen.
Looking Ahead: Investor Concerns and Game Releases
Amid these financial challenges, investors are keeping a close eye on Nintendo’s upcoming game releases. Notable titles launched this year, such as “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream” and the unexpectedly popular “Pokémon Pokopia“, have added to the company’s portfolio, but analysts note that a lack of major releases may hinder sales growth.
Expectations are high for the release of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time“, a remake of the highly influential game, which debuted recently. “Nintendo’s only real blockbuster this fiscal year is the Ocarina of Time remake. It’s not enough to make investors happy, especially after the device is now as expensive as it is,” stated Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games. He emphasized the need for Nintendo to leverage hit games to drive console sales, especially in a competitive market.
Furthermore, fans can anticipate new Pokémon games set to release in 2027, with hopes that these titles will invigorate sales and bolster the Switch 2’s market performance in the future.
